Varian 2100 C/DLinear AcceleratorExternal beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is delivered at the facility on a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. The Varian 2100 C/D linear accelerator is undisputably one of the most reliable linear accelerators available in the world. This sophisticated, high-tech piece of equipment generates multiple energies of either photon beam or electron beam radiation which is carefully directed toward and into a patient's tumor. The effect of the radiation is that of actually killing or “crippling” of the cancer cells. Computer monitored technology is used for beam directing and beam shaping. In addition the conformal three-dimensional treatment planning computer system (Helax TMS) is utilized for computer surveillance of treatment field set ups, and provides for the maximum possible safe dose of radiation to be delivered to the cancer cells, while limiting the dose of radiation to the surrounding normal tissues. This particular linear accelerator, at a cost well in excess of $1 million also provides specific types of “dynamic therapy” including electron beam arcing, whole body irradiation, and multiple other enhancements, which are used to specifically tailor the treatment to an individual patient. The linear accelerator itself generates one of the highest photon beams available in clinical practice today. Both a lower energy 6 MV photon beam and a 23 MV (18 MV) photon beam can be produced for treatment of larger patients and tumors which lie deep in the body. With respect to versatility, reliability, and accuracy of operation, the Varian 2100 C/D being operated at the Carolina Radiation Medicine Cancer Treatment Center is truly the "workhorse" of modern technology in the radiation oncology world.
